Director General of DRI Mr. Win Khaing Moe and Mr Daniel Swift of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) officially dedicated the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Enquiry Point.
As a Member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Myanmar seeks to comply with the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT Agreement) which is designed to ensure that technical regulations, standards, testing and certification procedures do not create unnecessary obstacles to trade.Each WTO/ASEAN Member is required operate an Enquiry Point that can answer all reasonable inquiries from other WTO/ASEAN Member countries as well as from interested domestic parties.
The Myanmar TBT Enquiry Point and Information Center has been established within the Myanmar Standards and Quality Department to coordinate with central and local government agencies and other relevant organizations. The EP will provide information and documents and assistance in answering domestic and foreign enquires concerning standards, technical regulations, and testing and product certification procedures that apply to products sold in Myanmar and the technical requirements for products exported to other WTO and ASEAN member countries, and to facilitate notifications of TBT measures to the WTO and ASEAN. These basic services will be provided by the Enquiry Point office free of charge.
USAID provided technical assistance and training for the staff of the Department of Research and Innovation in the operation of a WTO/ASEAN compliant Enquiry Point and Information Center. In addition USAID equipped the EP office with an integrated information technology computer system, provided furniture and the environmental control system.
