H.E. Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, Union Minister, Ministry o Education and H.E. Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany attended the celebration of World Metrology Day (2018) and kindly gave welcome and opening speech. And also the members from National Standards Council, the Director General of DRI, the rectors from each universities in Yangon, the representative person from the international organization such as PTB, USAID and JICA, the key person from Myanmar Engineer Council, MES, UMFCCI, MRF, the managers from the related industrial zones, the small and medium enterprises, the distinguish guests and the representative person form Metrology Division, NSQD attended the celebration of the World Metrology Day (2018).
World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The aim of the Metre Convention is world-wide uniformity of measurement.
The theme for World Metrology Day (2018) is “Constant evolution of the International System of Units”. This theme was chosen because in November 2018, the General Conference on Weights and Measures is expected to agree one of the largest changes to the International System of Units (the SI) since its inception.
Director General, Department of Research and Innovation (MOE), Win Khaing Moe said “We held World Metrology Day with the support of PTB. This is a public awareness program. We aim to promote the word “Metrology” which is defined as the subject of exact measurement – science of the exhibition. Metrology is so important. It has two parts – legal metrology and scientific industry metrology. We aim to provide exact measurements by establishing the national primary standard.”
Metrology, the science of measurement, plays a central role in scientific discovery and innovation, industrial manufacturing and international trade, in improving the quality of life and in protecting the global environment.
Director, Department of Research and Innovation (MOE), Dr. Kyaw Soe Lwin said “Today, I will discuss about metrology, the support to industrial zones by our department with the use of metrology, the progress of National Metrology Institute and future plans. In the last years, we could only provide measurement service – measurement report. Now, we can provide calibration certificate level services with international best practices. We will continue to work on the accurate SI units after establishing National Institute of Metrology Myanmar. (NIMM) .”
The Department of Research and Innovation plans to establish a laboratory to test rice moister and provide calibration services with the help of JICA within this year.
